It’s not often that you find great 80s style gore in this age of CGI trash special effects. I’m talking gore in the same vein as The Thing, Cronenberg movies, and the works of Tom Savini. Okay, maybe the gore in The Void isn’t quite on par with Savini, but it’s pretty damn good.
The IMDB synopsis: “Shortly after delivering a patient to an understaffed hospital, a police officer experiences strange and violent occurrences seemingly linked to a group of mysterious hooded figures.”
That synopsis leaves out a lot. In no particular order, The Void includes tentacles, cultism, zombies, decapitation, resurrection, revenge, torture, cosmic portals, gunfights, axes, the birthing of grotesque things from human hosts, evil doctors, pyramids, skin removal, eye stabbing, setting people on fire, and one gory scene after another.
Yeah, it’s jam-packed with atrocities. And honestly, it probably becomes a little much at some points; a bit convoluted. The acting leaves a little to be desired, though Daniel Fathers was impressive as the father. There are a few wardrobe errors with the lead character Daniel Carter (Aaron Poole), where his shirt is covered in blood in one scene and with little more than a smudge in the next. And I never understood why the woman in labor is never put on a bed. This group of people is trapped in a hospital with numerous beds at their disposal, yet they leave the pregnant chick laying on the floor for the majority of the film.
But these slip-ups almost add to the feeling of this 2016 movie being a blast from the past. It’s old-fashioned gore. It’s splattacular!
