The Vampire Lovers (1970) - Movie Review / Film Essay

Salt and pepper, peanut butter and jelly, hammer and nails–all things that go together, right? Add vampires and lesbians to that list. Or at least vampires and lust. Either way, the sexual allure of everyone’s favorite blood-sucking monster is undeniable.

Hammer Films put out their share of vampire films throughout the 50s, 60s, and 70s. In fact, they led the way in that cinematic arena. The Vampire Lovers is among Hammer’s best. Also, the movie includes lusty lesbians…always a plus.

Based on the 1872 novella Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu, The Vampire Lovers is about a beautiful vampiress who parasitically loves and feeds her way through multiple upscale British families, before eventually having to face death at the hands of one of Hammer’s favorite leading men–Peter Cushing.

Admittedly, the story would probably drag a bit if it weren’t for the strategically placed nude scenes that reel you back in just as your eyes are growing heavy. Hammer has produced better written stories, and certainly movies with better gore and special effects. But rarely did they deliver a film as visually pleasing as The Vampire Lovers.

It does not disappoint. Watch it YouTube.
