Goth (2003)

Film Review: Goth (2003) | HNN

Oh boy, where to start…

I guess I’ll start with the good things about Goth, since that won’t take long. The lead actress–Phoebe Dollar as Goth–really does seem like a crazy bitch. And the script was on the verge of being okay if it wasn’t completely ruined by the fact that this chick was apparently kidnapping and dominating folks with nothing but a knife.

There are a lot–and I mean A LOT–of issues with this film, but lets start with the knife that should have been a gun. Everyone in the movie, men and women alike, is bigger than Goth. She’s short and petite. Yet, she’s somehow able to repeatedly overpower and beat the shit out of people, kidnap the same couple over and over, and murder people while their significant others just stand there. It’s ridiculous. If she carried a gun, it could almost be plausible that she accomplishes all the shit she does. But she carries only knife. And a shitty knife at that! It’s one of those stupid decorative knives that have no real-world purpose.

The acting is horrendous. I suppose it can be blamed on the directing. When the actors are told to just stand there while other characters are being slaughtered, they can’t help but look perplexed and like they can’t remember their lines. Maybe with the first kill–maybe even the first two–you can get away with characters being petrified by witnessing the murder of their friends. But at some point, someone has to run or, even better, attack! I mean, the bitch has nothing but a knife! Attack and overpower!

The camera work and sound effects are equally bad. The attempts at gore are laughable. And I don’t think they made any attempt to properly edit the film There are several scenes including sex and nudity, but the rest of the movie is so bad that it has no impact on enjoyment. The only reason I stuck it out till the end was because I was holding out hope they would show who was driving the van. You know, the van Goth is transporting this kidnapped couple in for the duration of the film. Alas, we’re never told who’s driving the van. Judging by the rest of Goth, it probably never even came up.

Wow. Goth takes the cake thus far on the PHEMSA ratings with a 17. By far the lowest yet. Yeah, it’s bad. But if you want to watch it, here it is on Tubi.
