What do you do when you get full frontal nudity–both male and female–within the first five minutes of a film? Keep watching! Harvest Lake is a hyper-sexualized horror/exploitation flick. Even the plant life drips with erotic overtones.
Unfortunately, the extreme emphasis on sex results in a largely plotless experience. It’s Ben’s (Dan Nye) birthday, and we’re following him and his group of friends as they retreat to the familiar cabin in the woods for a weekend of beer, drugs, and sex. And tentacles.
The movie bounces around between sex scenes, injecting the occasional tentacle or evil eye or semen-dripping vegetation, without any clear explanation of what’s going on. Most exploitation films benefit from a short runtime–this one is a swift seventy-seven minutes–but it would have benefited greatly from fifteen or twenty minutes more of storyline.
Harvest Lake has some decent scenes, and it plays to the animalistic desires of humanity. And the acting is not half bad. Tristan Risk, in particular, gives an impressive performance as Cat, Ben’s sluty goth girlfriend.
