Well, you still have loads of curvy women–including exploitation legends like Pam Grier and Roberta Collins–being locked up and tortured, but, unfortunately, Women in Cages simply doesn’t compare to its sister movies, The Big Bird Cage and Big Doll House.
The three films were made back to back to back, with Women in Cages wedged in the middle. The film is more ambitious than the others, with a more complex plot and fight scenes that are reminiscent of action flicks of the day. But this is to the movie’s detriment. The plot and sub-par Kung Fu distract viewers from what made them put the movie on to begin with–women in cages.
Though Grier is involved in some good torture scenes, she doesn’t impress as the bad guy. One would think her typical no-nonsense attitude and sharp tongue would be suited for a villain. But she kind of falls flat (no pun intended).
Don’t get me wrong, it’s not all bad. There are still shower scenes and torture scenes galore, and an impressive dungeon that should make any sadist jealous. And of course, the ladies are scantily clothed, always with rips and holes in just the right spots.
