For some reason, the part of this moving that really sticks with me is when Seth (Dominic Monaghan) asks his love interest Holly (Ksenia Solo) if she wants to go see Ben Folds with him. Really, dude, Ben Folds? Not surprisingly, she declines his offer.
Okay, okay, that has nothing really to do with the overall plot. Seth is a creepy creepster who is infatuated with Holly, who is a bitch waitress who likes jerk boyfriends. After Holly shoots down several of his creepy come-ons, Seth decides the best course of action is to drug her and haul her down to the basement of the animal shelter where he works as a security guard.
It’s a compelling thriller, I suppose. And while the twist about halfway through the movie is predictable, the one at the end is not, and it’s really great. But…you never really believe the main character. Seth goes from an awkward romantic to a psychotic manipulator in a matter of no time. Also, the gore could have been better. There were several instances where the movie-makers could have gone ALL THE WAY, showing the audience all the visceral nastiness of torture. But, sadly, they held back.
(I just noticed on IMDB that Pet made a mere $63 its opening weekend…holy shit.)
Anyway, it’s not a complete waste of time, in my opinion. Check it out on Amazon.
